Message from the President
I hope everyone is coping with the corona virus. If like me, you are finding it hard dealing with the latest outbreak, I’m not relishing further restrictions. While the latest outbreaks are not unexpected it is still going to be very hard for all of us to bunker down again.
So please be careful and take care.
Regarding local matters I have a number of items to report on. They are
listed below. The most disappointing news I received was from the NSW
Heritage Office. The Trust’s request for an Interim Heritage Order over
the whole of the property known as 181-183 Beecroft Road Cheltenham was
unsuccessful.
We tried very hard, but to achieve a state listing was always going to be a huge challenge.
Both Parramatta and Hornsby Councils are still holding online meetings
with audio video technology where the public are only able to watch via
live streaming. The only public input is by emailing a prepared
statement through to council prior to the meeting, which is then read
out to the councillors. It is a similar arrangement with the local
planning panels and even the Land and Environment Court. Naturally I
miss the interaction one shares at a ‘normal’ meeting.
City of Parramatta Business Paper The
Powerhouse Museum and its proposed relocation has been in the media
lately. Parramatta Council held an extraordinary meeting on 2nd July 2020 to debate the issue. The business papers and draft minutes are worth reading and can be accessed by CLICKING HEREand HERErespectively.
You will note that the meeting was held the week before the State
Government announced the retention of the existing Ultimo site.
The City of Parramatta Local Planning Panel The City of Parramatta Local Planning Panel will be meeting next week on 21st
July 2020 to determine two proposed child care centres, one in Ray Rd
Epping and the other in Orchard Road Beecroft. Both proposals
generated a lot of interest with many objections submitted to Council. CLICK HERE to view the business papers and read Council’s recommendation.
Hornsby Council business papers At their 8th
July 2020 meeting, Hornsby Council approved the public exhibition of
two discussion papers, Local Housing Strategy and Seniors Housing Demand
and Supply Review. CLICK HEREfor
the business papers. After reading the Parramatta Council LPP
item above, seniors housing is an issue in many local government areas
and not just Hornsby.
Beecroft War Memorial Repairs Hornsby Council will be issuing a contract
soon for major repairs to the sandstone war memorial. These proposed
works will be substantial and will take a number of months to complete.
Expect scaffolding to be erected and a sizeable area around the memorial
to be partitioned off as a designated work site. Some residents may
recall the repairs to the memorial about 10 years ago. Those works were
of a temporary nature and did not address the problems within the
structure itself.
This type of repair work is not unexpected for a structure approximately 100 years old and constructed from sandstone.
Bamboo Removal from Rail Corridor next to Beecroft Village Green Anyone
walking through the Beecroft Village Green would have noticed that
State Rail has removed the invasive bamboo from the rail corridor.
The Trust understands the works will include a follow up eradication of
the rhizomes as they regrow. State Rail and Council intend to screen the
rail line with more appropriate new plantings.
Request for an Interim Heritage Order over 181-183 Beecroft Rd Cheltenham The
Trust, together with the Beecroft Cheltenham History Group and Byles
Creek Valley Union, prepared a detailed submission to the NSW Heritage
Council for an Interim heritage Order (IHO). An IHO was to be a
temporary listing while the State Government considered the property to
be worthy of a State Listing. Currently only part of the property (the
front garden) is listed as a local item. The Trust considered the
whole of this prominent property should be listed. There was a sense of
urgency to protect the whole property because the owner has lodged a
development application for a child care centre that would materially
